The 60th birthday is a bit of a milestone; one often associated with growing old and reduced opportunities rather then a celebration of life to come. To focus on that future and adventures yet to be had I’ve established a goal of 60 fun and enlightening adventures for my 60th year.
Not being a very linear person I’ve decided to start my year early. Since I'm not much of a tweeter or Facebook person I've decided to post a blog.
1 Finger lake – Iditarod Dog Sled Race 3/1 – 3/5 2013
The Iditarod Dog Sled Race is the classic Alaskan event. When Tim Johnson approached me about assisting at the Finger lake checkpoint I jumped at the opportunity. Marginal weather kept us in Anchorage for 2 days before hoping a bush plane into Finger Lake.
Joining me was Susanne, Merit, Michele and Tim, 4 veterinarians’, and several communication people. My job was to put up wall tents, distribute straw, fuel for musher’s stoves, and assist with parking and cleaning up after dog teams.
Our responsibilities kicked off early with musher Martin Buser who cruised through at 1:30 am and ending at 8pm with the last musher from Jamaica. I was exhausted by days end ready for my tent and warm sleeping bag.
2 Silvertip 3/12
Silvertip is one of my favorite mountains. Located between Turnagain Pass and Summit it is one of the dominant
Chugach peaks (5020 feet).
This year’s trip included Frank Coyle, John Fowler, and Gaby. It was my second ski day for a season delayed by time in Florida. Alaska had a poor season start with high avalanche danger. Backcountry conditions were just settling in when we skied Silvertip.
It was a fantastic day of sun and mostly good snow.I was especially glad about this because my season was cut short by an injury a couple of days later at Alyeska. Skiing hard 3 days in a row may not be the smartest way to start the season. I pulled my popliteal tendon. Note to self more ski related training next fall.
